This is because our very identities are fundamentally built on assumptions about who we are and what it means to be included in the category of “human”. While many people may find this process disturbing, these artificial distinctions between insider and outsider reveal a key element in the operation of power. Humans also do this to other “outsiders” such as immigrants and refugees. ![]() A similar process takes places within a military setting, where enemies are cast as less than human to make them easier to fight and easier to kill. People who the authorities treat much like animals, or less than animals (like pests) who need to be guarded against with anti-homeless spikes and benches designed to prevent sleep. And yet, as a society, we regularly dehumanise others, and cast them as animal or less than human – what philosopher Giorgio Agamben describes as “bare life”. But should robots have rights? And will humanity ever reach a point where human and machine are treated the same?Īt the heart of the debate is that most fundamental question: what does it mean to be human? Intuitively, we all think we know what this means – it almost goes without saying. ![]() Dick are fast turning from science fiction into science fact. At the dog park, Greta and Big Swiss (whose real name is Flavia) meet by chance, and romance between the two blossoms, complicated by the fact that Greta is privy to Big Swiss’s most private inner thoughts. Greta is working as a transcriptionist for a local sex therapist named Om when she is captivated by the voice of one of Om’s patients, a 30-something married woman whom she nicknames Big Swiss for her height and nationality, who used to live in Brooklyn. The protagonist, Greta, is in her 40s, living in a semi-derelict Dutch farmhouse in Hudson, N.Y., with her beloved dog, Piñón. Beagin ( Vacuum in the Dark) delivers a delightfully off-kilter romantic comedy set in a Hudson Valley increasingly transformed by transplants from New York City. ![]() ![]() ![]() Scherer said in an earlier statement, “It’s a thrill to be reunited with Vicki Lewis onstage. Bad luck follows, however: her bridegroom soon confesses that as a homosexual he can never make her happy the marriage is subsequently dissolved and Dinah lands back in her father's house. Despite her initial aversion to her financÉ, Dinah is so relieved to escape her family's involvement with the sale of opium-which she blames for destroying her mother-that she marries willingly. Instead, she is rewarded with a betrothal to the handsome, intellectual heir of a tea dynasty in distant Darjeeling. Nevertheless, the scandal of her mother's death has ruined Dinah's chances of marrying a local boy. Too tall, too intelligent, and far too pushy to suit 19th-century Calcutta's intimate Jewish community, Dinah at least remains free of her mother's opium addiction and is unlikely to be murdered, as Luna was, by a jealous lover. Dinah Sassoon was never a delicate beauty like her mother, Luna, and the gossips whisper that it's just as well. Here, Courter (Code Ezra, 1986, etc.) writes of a Jewish heiress to an opium empire who braces scandal to become a formidable defender of her own and her family's vital interests. ![]() ![]() ![]() Triathletes who read or listen to Matt’s work will understand who certain techniques apply to, what the outcomes are if the techniques are applies, and how to apply them. This book! This book was such a treat for me. But thankfully, my fears turned out to be groundless. ![]() I can’t in good faith ever fake a positive review when I don’t like the book. The excited part is easy to understand but dread because, what if I hated the book? Or what if the story didn’t speak to me? My principles wouldn’t allow me to give a less than honest opinion. My first ever Nora Roberts ARC! I was both excited and terrified to read Hideaway. So I was over the moon when I got the ARC. Her books saved my life, shaped my future and I can’t thank her enough for her stories. Nora Roberts is my favorite author in the world. I have to say upfront, I couldn’t believe it when I was lucky enough to get approved for the ARC of this book. She is kidnapped as a child and that trauma, with its underlying hurtful revelations, ripples throughout her life, re-shaping it from what could have to what can be, disrupting her set path, affecting not just her but her entire family and that of Dillon Cooper’s and forcing her to turn into a new direction. Hideaway is the story of Cate Sullivan, the prodigy of a famous Hollywood family. ![]() Rating: 5/5 □□□□□ Genre: Contemporary Romance, Suspense Review: ![]() |
